Welcome to AAMAonline.org

The African American Music Association (AAMA) was established in 1998 to preserve, protect and foster the continued development of African American music and the legacy of those who compose, record and perform the music.

The AAMA is a non-profit, 501 (c)(3) entity, organized exclusively for charitable, cultural and educational purposes.  Its primary goal is to offer programs and activities to the community that will assure a better quality of life for those persons who have an interest in pursuing the performing arts as a career or advocation.  Human and personal development through cultural arts activity is the overall goal.

Since its inception, the AAMA has made it possible for many local performing artists to display their talents through concerts, street festivals, talent shows, and various other kinds of community-based cultural arts activities.

AAMA's major programs include:

The Annual Marvin Gay Day Celebration - This fundraising event consists of a proclamation by the mayor of Washington, resolution acknowledgement by the District of Columbia City Council, the awarding of an Outstanding Community Service Award, local artist talent showcase, and special performances by national recording acts.

Marvin P. Gaye, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund - For more than 20 years, the AAMA has assisted several deserving District of Columbia Public high school seniors in the pursuit of a higher education in the fine arts.

Corporate Neighborhood Youth Project - Using the universal language of music as the backdrop, this project empowers at-risk youth information, skills and tools to resist alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, ultimately producing mentally healthy, aware and drug-free young people who are models for their peers and creators of positive change in their communities.

Annual Health Fair - This free event promotes healthy lifestyles and behaviors among artists and the community as a whole.

The African American Music Association is dedicated to bringing "the arts to the community and community to the arts."
